Automated control of the availability of goods on the shelves

In response to requests from customers and the challenges of the modern market, we have developed a mobile autonomous system to collect images and control the availability of goods in retail outlets. This solution has already been implemented by several customers and has proven its effectiveness in practice. We offer this retail product as a ready-made solution for automated shelf monitoring.

Our solution is a mobile image acquisition and transmission system based on a single-board computer and a USB camera with a sensor, with the organization of remote access via a USB modem.

Purpose of solution development

• Create a stand-alone platform for capturing and preprocessing high-resolution images or videos.

• Ensure the transfer of the received data to the cloud service or to a remote server via the Internet.

• Minimize the size and energy consumption of the system for use in the field.

Hardware part

USB camera with a color sensor and a maximum shooting speed of up to 30 frames/s in full resolution, a single-board computer with a full stack of image processing tools, a USB modem that provides data transfer via 4G/LTE.

Software system

The system works on the following principle: first, using the UVC driver, the camera collects the image, after which a specially designed application adjusts the sensor parameters, including exposure, zoom and white balance. Next, the image goes through the pre-processing stage: noise is eliminated, quality correction is performed, and the video stream is compressed using H.264 or H.265 codecs.

After processing, the data is transferred to the cloud environment via a PPP or PPoE connection established using a USB modem, using HTTP or HTTPS protocols. To monitor and control the shooting process, a convenient web interface or REST-API is provided, which provides full remote access to the system settings.

Functionality

An example of automated control of tobacco lay-out at the point of sale

• Capture photos and videos in real time with a resolution of up to 5 megapixels

• Adjusting the exposure, white balance and digital processing parameters of the OV5693 sensor via SCCB interface

• Zoom and crop images at the sensor or software driver level

• Automatic transfer of collected data to remote repositories

• Ability to operate from an autonomous Power Bank power supply for field conditions

This solution allows you to quickly deploy monitoring, access control or “smart” IoT cameras on remote or mobile sites with minimal hardware and programming costs.

Why retail should pay attention to solutions to control the availability of goods on the shelves

The system for controlling the availability of goods on the shelves is a relevant and practical solution for retail, as it allows to automate one of the most resource-intensive processes — monitoring of the layout. Thanks to its autonomy, compactness and the ability to work without a constant connection to the power supply, it is easy to integrate into any retail facility — from large supermarkets to shops near your home.

The system helps to reduce losses from the absence of goods on the shelves, increase the level of customer service and promptly respond to violations of merchandising standards. This is a modern tool for improving the efficiency of the retail network, which has already proven its practical value in real conditions.

Who needs a system for controlling the availability of goods on the shelves

Retail networks

• Grocery supermarkets and hypermarkets

• Shops near the house

• FMCG format stores

• Pharmacy chains to monitor the availability of medicines on display cases

• Chains of household chemicals and cosmetics stores

Gas stations and fuel networks

To networks of gas stations with shopping areas to control shelves in shopping areas, coffee machines, refrigerators and racks.

Catering networks (HoReCa)

• Fast food chains

• Coffee shops and mini-markets in the field of HoReCa, including in shopping centers, railway stations, airports to control the delivery of snacks, drinks, sauces, ready meals.

Franchise and multi-brand points

• Small and medium format points, especially with partially centralized logistics

• Boutiques or networks with a selective assortment (electronics, gadgets, stationery)

Storage Hubs and Darksters

Darksters and warehouses for online stores and delivery services to control the laying out, restocking of goods and balances.

Shelf monitoring systemis a modern IT solution for automating the control of the loading of goods in stores, pharmacies, gas stations and HoReCa. It helps retailers reduce losses from the absence of goods in the shop window, increase operational efficiency and improve the customer experience.
The introduction of automated shelf control is an important step towards the digital transformation of retail outlets.
