The corporate network of any company can be subject to the threat of infiltration and propagation of viruses, malicious code and Trojans via electronic mail channels and HTTP/FTP services used for gaining access to the resources of node components of the corporate network and public networks (the Internet), multi-access applications (MS Exchange, Lotus Notes), and file servers and removable information carriers (diskettes, CD-ROMs and others).
To effectively solve the tasks of virus attack protection, all possible virus propagation channels have to be blocked. For this, an integrated system of antivirus protection is created at all levels and components of the information system:
- Protection of external information exchange (firewalls, including mail servers used for connecting objects to communication channels and public networks)
- Protection of internal and external mail exchange
- Protection of corporate servers
- Protection of user workstations
For effectively solving the task of virus attack protection, the following is required:
- To set up an antivirus gateway for continuous antivirus monitoring of external and internal SMTP/HTTP/FTP traffic
- To ensure antivirus protection when using multi-access systems (Lotus Notes, and others) by installing antivirus facilities on servers
- To conduct centralized antivirus monitoring and regular scanning of file systems on user workstations, object servers and multi-access servers
- To set up logging and alerting on virus attack-related events
- To update antivirus bases automatically and regularly
- To maintain centralized control of all antivirus protection system components, and
- To isolate suspicious files and unknown viruses detected by heuristic algorithms (place them in the central quarantine) for subsequent analysis
